The project proposal: Dr Flexor and Professor Sartorious need help to rebuild their planetarium which was destroyed in an earthquake. Up to 30 juniors will make models of the planets of our solar system to a scale of 100,000,000:1. The project involves preparatory classroom work.

The Challenge

The class will receive a challenge pack containing:-.

* a comic strip story, showing Dr Flexor & Professor Sartorious losing their Planetarium in an earthquake and concluding that primary school children could help them rebuild.

* a letter, asking the class to help

* information, saved from the earthquake, to help the class calculate the planet sizes.

The Tasks The class will be divided into groups and given deadlines to complete their tasks.

The first task will be to email Ballyhoo with a codename and email address.

The second task will be to email Ballyhoo with the dimensions of the planets.

The third task will be for each group to produce a report on one planet.

The Rebuild

Over two days the class will work with Dr Flexor and Professor Sartorious to make paper tape models of the nine planets, decorated with a variety of materials. The class start in their original planet groups but will be regrouped as time progresses. Most of the pupils will contribute to the making of the larger planets, Jupiter and Saturn.
